About Travel to Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai is a large city, with around 1.2 million residents, and it’s also a very old city established in 1296. The central part of the city, often referred to as ‘Chiang Mai Old Town’, is very popular with leisure travellers who come to visit the ancient temples. Other parts of the city are also popular with tourists, particularly the lively riverside to the east of Chiang Mai Old Town. In addition to this there are lots of other points of interest located within a 1 hour drive the city.

Chiang Mai Old Town

Chiang Mai was the first capital city of the Lanna Kingdom, which at the time was one of several smaller kingdoms that existed side by side within Thailand. The original part of the city was constructed with a defensive wall and a moat on four sides. The moat is still there but only small sections of the wall remain, some parts of which have been extensively reconstructed.

The main attractions in the Old Town area are its many temples. The two most visited of these temples are Wat Phra Singh, notable for its golden chedi towers and fantastic artwork, and Wat Chedi Luang, the main feature of which is its enormous chedi which partially collapsed during an earthquake in 1545. A third smaller temple which is also popular is Wat Lok Moli, located on the northern edge of the Old Town. Wat Lok Moli has a chedi tower constructed in 1527 and a fantastic wooden prayer hall which was built using traditional techniques in 2003.

From the Tha Phae Gate, on the eastern side of Chiang Mai Old Town, it’s just over 1 km to the Ping River and about 800 metres walking distance to the Changklan Road. The Changklan Road is typically the busiest part of the city in the evening except for Sundays when the Old Town hosts the weekly Walking Street Market. As well as lots of bars and restaurants, and also several good value for money mid-range hotels, the Changklan Road features several night markets with food, drinks, and free entertainment on offer to visitors. These night markets tend to be popular with families in particular.

There are also some very good and normally lively bars and restaurants located on the riverside itself. From the Old Town if you travel eastward along the Tha Phae Road, cross the Nawarat Bridge over the Ping River, and then turn left you come to one of Chiang Mai’s most famous restaurants, The Riverside Bar & Restaurant. The main dining room at The Riverside Bar & Restaurant overlooks the Ping River. The The Riverside Bar & Restaurant also has an inside area with a separate bar where live music is played every night of the week.
