Mandalay is the 2nd largest city in Myanmar with a population of over 1.2 million people. Mandalay is by far the largest city in the north of Myanmar and one point was the royal capital of the country. During this period the city was extensively rebuilt to include a large royal quarter to the city and it is this area which is the main attraction for visitors to the modern city of Mandalay.
Mandalay is also a more convenient starting point than Yangon (the other city with international air connections) for journeys to destinations in the north of Myanmar such as Inle Lake, Pyin Oo Lwin and Myitkyina in the far north of the country.
