About Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai is the capital city of Thailand’s Northern Province. Chiang Mai is a much smaller city than Bangkok, with a city centre population of around 130,000 people. Chiang Mai is a very popular destination for tourists because of its walled old town area and the nearby hills, forest and temples of the Doi Suthep National Park.

Chiang Mai is far less industrialised than Bangkok and the city is very liveable with plenty of affordable accommodation and value for money bars and restaurants. In the daytime there are plenty of interesting temples and other attractions to visit in the city itself or fairly nearby. In the evening Chiang Mai is also very lively: it has several night markets, most famous of which is the Sunday night walking street market, some great bars and restaurants in the riverside area, and even an ultra modern ‘hipster’ scene to the north-west of the old town on the Nimmanahaeminda Road.
