About Vang Vieng
Vang Vieng is a riverside town located roughly halfway between Vientiane and Luang Prabang. The town is popular with tourists for a number of reason. First and foremost, the scenery in Vang Vieng and the surrounding area is very beautiful. Vang Vieng is in a scenic valley with a wide river flowing through the town and steep mountains, particularly on the west side of the river, on either side. Vang Vieng is also one of the most ‘tourist friendly’ places in Laos with all the conveniences and amenities you would would expect in a beachs ide resort in neighbouring Thailand. Outside a handful of places in Laos you can struggle to find anyone who speaks English or provides ‘Western standard’ accommodation or even hot coffee in the morning. A lot of younger visitors come to Vang Vieng as well as increasing numbers of visitors from China because it’s easily accessible for even the least adventurous traveller.

Vang Vieng itself is not particular exciting. Most of the main tourist attractions are all 5 km to 7 km away from the town centre to the west. These include caves, viewpoints and three ‘blue lagoons’ which are located in this area. You can get there in a taxi, rent a motorbike, or pedal yourself on a mountain bike. A popular option, however, is to book a half or full day tour – they are not particular expensive – and combine a visit to these sites with a tubing trip in the river. The tubing site is up stream from Vang Vieng and the way to go tubing is to get a tubing company to take you and your tube about 10 km upstream from Vang Vieng and then for them to pick you up at an end point, which is near to the northern most point of Vang Vieng.
