About Travel to Koh Yao Noi


Koh Yao Noi is the second largest island in Phang Nga Bay, 11 km long by 7 km at it widest point. Koh Yao Noi is located just to the North of the more developed Koh Yao Yai, and approximately half way between Phuket to the West and Krabi to the East. From Koh Yao Noi it’s only 30 minutes by speed boat to Phuket making the island easily accessible.

Despite the ease with which visitors can get to Koh Yao Noi it’s not overrun with tourists like Phuket or Koh Phi Phi. For many visitors Koh Yao Noi is the perfect Thai island destination because of the healthy balance of amenities, including shops and good hotels, and unspoilt countryside. Aside from the resorts, Koh Yao Noi has 13 small villages which are predominantly inhabited by Muslim people who have lived there for generations. For local people tourism is an important industry on Koh Yao Noi, but so is fishing and agriculture, and this makes Koh Yao Noi a more interesting cultural experience that parts of Thailand where people have largely abandoned traditional industries.

Koh Yao Noi is small enough to drive all the way around on a motorbike in about 2 hours. The three main places to stay in Koh Yao Yai are the beaches of Thao Khao, Klong Jark and Pasai Beach, on the South and East coasts of the island. Klong Kark beach is the location of the island’s most luxurious resorts, the Six Senses Yao Noi and Cape Kudu Hotel. Close to the resorts are a small range of indepdent restaurants and bars. Koh Yao Yai also has shops, including a branch of 7-Eleven, and ATM machines.

Koh Yao Noi is an excellent base for boat trips around Phang Nga Bay, which is very picturesque with plenty of interesting islands. Snorkelling, scuba diving and kyaking are also popular activities, and there are several companies on Koh Yao Yai operating organised trips for each of these activities. In terms of things to do on the island, exploring the small villages and many secluded beaches by bicycle or motorbike is a popular activity. The island also has a yoga centre and a Muay Thai gym.
