About Chanthaburi
Chanthaburi is a prosperous multi-cultural town with a pleasant atmosphere, some great food, good hotels, fantastic architecture and virtually no foreign visitors. Thai people visit Chanthaburi and the surrounding areas in large numbers – its a popular destination for domestic tourists – but it hasn’t really caught on yet with international tourists.

The two main industries in Chanthaburi are gem trading and growing fruit. During the month of June every year when the rambutan, longon and mangostein all ripen ready to be harvested. The roads around Chanthaburi are lined with cars selling fruit and fruit buyers, some market stall owners and others large international food retailers, tour the town for the best fruit. If you eat Thai fruit in Europe or North America chances are that fruit will have been grown in Chanthaburi Province.
The town of Chanthaburi has developed on the back of this prosperity attracting people from all over Asia to settle in Chanthaburi, including most notably Christians from Vietnam. The town has Thailand’s largest Catholic cathedral (The Church of the Immaculate Conception), and some interesting town houses with Chinese design styles, in addition to some brilliant Thai architecture particularly Wat Khao Sukim.
Near to Chanthaburi is the fantastic Farm Poo Nim, a restaurant on a river estuary which specialises in seafood. Farm Poo Nim’s signature dish is soft shelled crab fried with garlic and pepper and this dish at this restaurant has a good claim to being one of the finest crab dishes you will find anywhere in the world, at around 150 THB a plate.
