River Ferries in Bangkok
Bangkok has a city centre river ferry service called the Chao Phraya Express Boat. These river ferries run on the Chao Phraya River which runs north to south through Bangkok. Bangkok also has a canal boat commuter service which tends to be less popular with tourists because its slightly dangerous getting on and off the boats and the views are not as good as the ones on the Chao Phraya Express Boat.
Bangkok’s river ferry service stops at a total of 38 piers on the Chao Phraya River, the most southerly pier is near the Rama III bridge and the most northerly stop is Pakkret near the river island of Koh Kret. Most people visiting Bangkok for leisure will most likely only ever use 4 of the 38 stops:
- Central Pier (Sathorn): Connection point to the BTS network (suburban overhead railway).
- Pier 4 (Marine Department): Walking distance to Bangkok Railway Station.
- Pier 8 (Tha Tien): Near the Grand Palace and Wat Po.
- Pier 13 (Phra Arthit): Walking distance to the Khao San Road.
Travel on the Chao Phraya Express Boat services is very cheap. The most expensive ticket costs 40 THB on the tourist boat boat service. On very similar normal services tickets cost between 10 THB and 32 THB depending upon how far you travel, which boat service you take and what time of day it is. Tickets are available to buy on the boat and you simply turn up at the pier get the next boat service which comes along. No pre-booking is required.
