About to Wat Phu Tok

Wat Phu Tok is one of the best known tourist attractions in Bueng Kan Province. The temple is built on and around a sandstone hill with steep sides rising to an altitude of 359 metres. The temple is free to visit and opens from 06:30 to 17:00 everyday except during the week around the time of the Songkran festival. You are advised, however, to stay clear of this particular attraction during the rainy season.

The reason you would not want to come here during the rainy season is that it would make it difficult to climb the wooden stairs and walkway that cling precariously to the sides of a cliff face rising in 7 stages to the top of the hill. We don’t recommend that children under the age 10 years old visit this attraction as due care and attention is required to negotiate the stairs and rickety walkways as a slip over the edge would be fatal. On the hill there are several caves with shrines, and one cave in particular is very interesting as it features life sized statues of around 100 famous monks all seated together praying.
