Chumphon itself is not a popular destination for foreign tourists. There are few attractions to visit in Chumphon town although the main road in Chumphon, the the Krumluang Chumphon Road, has a night market which serves authentic and very cheap Southern Thai cuisine which is difficult to find in other regions of Thailand. The main reason foreign visitors go to Chumphon is to catch a ferry to Koh Tao, Koh Samui or Koh Phangan.
Chumphon is the closest place to Bangkok where you get a ferry to these three islands in the Gulf of Thailand. Ferry piers in Chumphon Province are also the closest to the island of Koh Tao. The ferry piers in Surat Thani are closer to Koh Samui and Koh Phangan. There are three main ferry operators you can take to Koh Tao:
- Night Ferry: Departs at 22:00 from from the Night Boat Ferry Pier on the Tha Taphap River. The sea crossing takes 7 hours.
- Lomprayah Ferry: Departs from Tung Makham Pier at 07:00 and 13:00. The sea crossing takes 1 hour 45 minutes.
- Songserm: Departs from Mataporn Pier at 07:00. The sea crossing takes 2 hours 45 minutes.
The Lomprayah High Speed Ferry Company also operates a direct service departing from Chumphon Airport to Koh Tao departing every day at 08:50.
