About Travel to Koh Samui

Koh Samui is Thailand’s second largest island, after Phuket, measuring approximately 19 km by 15 kilometres wide. The centre of the island is hilly and largely covered by dense forest. Most of the island’s settlements and holiday accommodation is located on the coast and easily accessible via a ring road that encircles the outer edge of the whole island. The main town is Nathon, which is where most of the ferry services from Chumphon to Koh Samui terminate. Nathon is on the west side of Koh Samui and 24.5 km by road from the most popular beach resort area on the island, Chaweng, and 19 km by road from Bophut, which another popular beach destination on the island.

Taxis tend to be very expensive on Koh Samui. Unlike taxis in Bangkok, which for the most part use meters to charge for their services and offer great value for money as a consequence, taxis in Koh Samui do not use meters and few stick to the government set fares for journeys. You need to negotiate with the driver to agree a fare and the fares tend to be amongst the highest charged anywhere in Thailand. A cheaper option is to take a songthaew, which is a shared taxi with two rows of seats in the back. Songthaew in Koh Samui ply the long ring road passing through major towns such as Nathon, Chaweng, Maenam and Lamai charging 50 to 100 THB for most journeys. Songthaew depart from the car park in front of the major ferry terminals in Na Thon travelling in both directions around the ring road. Another option is to use the pre-paid minivan services operated by the Lomprayah High Speed Ferry company and the Seatran Discovery company, which both charge 150 THB per person for travel from the ferry port their services arrive into direct to any hotel or resort on Koh Samui.
