Getting to Koh Samui
Koh Samui has one airport and it’s privately owned by the same company as Bangkok Air. Flights to and from Koh Samui tend to be much more expensive than flights to most other destinations in Thailand. Other options for travel to and from Koh Samui all start with ferry journeys to either the neighbouring islands of Koh Phangan and Koh Tao or to the mainland.
Several companies operate transfer services between Koh Samui and the three closest airports to Koh Samui: Surat Thani Airport, Chumhon Airport and Nakhon Si Thammarat Airport. Generally it’s cheaper to pay for the ferry and bus service to one of these airports and then a connecting flight, than it is to fly direct between Koh Samui and Bangkok or another airport in Thailand. The journey. however, it takes considerably longer travelling via another airport.
Travel from Samui Airport
Taxis are expensive in Koh Samui compared to most other parts of Thailand. You can get taxis easily at Koh Samui Airport, but pre-booked minivan transfers to other destinations in Koh Samui are often much better value for money. Where to stay in Koh Samui
The most popular parts of Koh Samui are located in the eastern half of the island conveniently close to Samui Airport:
- Chaweng, which is the most developed beach resort town on the island, is only 2.7 km by road from Samui Airport.
- Lamai, located to the south of Chaweng, is similar to Chaweng with a good beach but less development and it’s generally better value for money. By road it’s 13.9 km from Samui Airport to Lamai.
- Bophut is located 7.5 km by road to the north west of Samui Airport. The area around the pleasant Fisherman’s Village and Bo Phut Beach tends to better suited to families and older visitors than Chaweng and Lamai. Bophut as a whole has many of Koh Samui’s best hotels and restaurants.
