About Travel to Khao Sok

About the National Park

Khao Sok National Park, which covers 739 square kilometres, is part of a cluster of 4 national parks forming a much larger wilderness area covering over 3,500 square kilometres. The park has several different habitats, most notably hills which rise to 960 metres above sea level and a man made lake (Cheow Lan Lake) with a surface area of 165 square kilometres.

The park supports a very large variety of plants, trees, animals, birds, insects, and fish, including 311 species of birds, 30 types of bats, and 48 species of mammals. Wild elephants, bears, leopards, and even the occasional tiger, live in Khao Sok National Park, although these rarer large mammals are rarely seen by visitors. What visitors are likely to see is lots of birds and monkeys, and a wide variety of plants including the world’s largest flower (the Rafflesia) if you visit during the first 3 months of the year.

Cheow Lan Lake is a major tourist attraction in its own right. The lake has lots of small steeply sided islands which bear some similarities to the more famous limestone islands in Ha Long Bay in Vietnam.

About the Western Entrance to the Park

The western entrance to Khao Sok National Park is a land based entrance to the park located at the northern edge of Khlong Sok Village, which is also referred to as Khao Sok Village. This is the entrance to use if you plan to go trekking or participate in other adventurous land based activities. There are 9 well signposted trails you can follow starting from the Khao Sok National Park Headquarters. There is also a popular canopy walk and ziplines located close by. For longer treks you can organise a guide at the headquarters building.

There are some small basic huts available just inside the western entrance to the park, along with a basic restaurant. Most visitors, however, choose to stay overnight in Khlong Sok Village because the facilities are better. There are over 30 hotels and resorts within 1 km of the western entrance ranging in price from around 400 THB a night in the Coco Khao Sok Hostel to over 4,000 THB a night in Malulee Khao Sok Resort. There are also plenty of independent bars and restaurants serving a wide range of food including pizza and sushi.

About the Eastern Entance to the Park

The entrance entrance to Khao Sok National Park is a water based entrance located at Ratchaprapha Pier, also known as Cheow Lan Pier. It’s located in the south east corner of Cheow Lan Lake near Ratchaprapha Dam.

Wooden boats are available for hire at Ratchaprapha Pier. For a basic 2 to 3 hour tour expect to pay around 2,000 THB. The boats can typically accommodate 6 people, and it’s fairly common for visitors travelling alone or in pairs to share a boat tour with other visitors to reduce the cost.

There are 14 privately operated floating bungalow resorts in Cheow Lan Lake. The accommodation varies considerably between the different resorts as does the price. For the most basic floating bungalows expect to pay around 1,200 THB, not including the cost of boat transfers to and from the resort. At the other end of scale, multiple room bungalows with air-conditioning (known as ‘floating villas’) cost about 30,000 THB a night. Breakfast and dinner is generally included in the room rates at these floating bungalow resorts.
