Travel from Chiang Mai to Pai
Pai is small town in the mountains 149 km from Chiang Mai. A trip to Pai is a popular overnight excursion for people visiting Chiang Mai. There is plenty to do and see in Pai, particularly the fantastic mountain scenery. The journey from Chiang Mai to Pai is an adventure in its own right. The road is famous for having hundreds of bends as it winds its way up and down the hills separating Chiang Mai from Pai. Some visitors choose to rent a motorbike and drive themselves, however, most choose to take a minivan which takes slightly over 4 hours. Be warned that the likelihood of experiencing car sickness on this journey is fairly high, and drivers on this route routinely hand out sick bags to passengers at the start of the journey for this reason.
For those who brave the winding mountain road to Pai the reward is a charming small town with plenty of places to visit nearby. One of the most popular activities for visitors is to rent a motorbike or car and to follow a trail around various points of interest. We recommend a visit to Yun Lai Viewpoint, the famous Coffee in Love cafe and the Ta-Pai Bridge before returning to Pai in the afternoon to enjoy a meal and a drink in one of the many lively bars and restaurants.
