About travel to Nong Khai

Nong Khai is a fairly large city with over 140,000 permanent residents spread across the metropolitan area. The city centre is pleasantly located on the banks of the Mekong River which separates Thailand from Laos. Nong Khai itself has few notable tourist attractions save for the Sala Keaw Khu, which is a large sculpture park featuring enormous Buddhist images. The main reason for most foreign visitors to come to Nong Khai is to travel overland to Vientiane in Laos. If you do plan to stay overnight in Nong Khai before travelling onto Laos the next morning the city has some good hotels, bars and restaurants which cater well for foreign visitors. In the evening time the most lively part of Nong Khai is the pedestrianised riverside promenade area, particularly on Saturday night when the weekly riverside market takes place.

From Nong Khai there are two ways to travel to Vientiane. The most popular option is to take the commuter bus across the Thai Lao Friendship Bridge and then take a bus or taxi from the Lao side of the river onto Vientiane city. The other option, which is less stressful in terms of long queues at immigration, is to take a train from Nong Khai Railway Station to Thanaleng Railway Station in Laos. Trains to Laos depart every day from Nong Khai at 07:30 and 14:45. The journey by train takes 15 minutes and costs a fixed rate of 20 THB per person one way. From Thanaleng Railway Station you can take a taxi or shared minivan to take you into Vientiance city centre.
