About Chiang Mai

There are two distinct parts of Chiang Mai which are popular with visitors to the city. The walled old town is where you will find the cheapest accommodation and also the city’s most famous temples, such as Wat Phra Singh. The old town is also the location of Chiang Mai’s famous Sunday Walking Street Market during which the main road from the Tha Phae Gate, on the eastern side of the city walls, is pedestrianised and stalls selling all kinds of products set up on the pavement. The nearby temple grounds are also opened up on Sunday evening and inexpensive food stalls operate there, with table and chairs provided for diners.

Many visitors to Chiang Mai choose not to stay in the old town itself but rather in the riverside area east of the old town. The main street in the riverside area is the lively Changklan Road. There are lots of large hotels here, as well as some great riverside guesthouses. This area also has lots of restaurants and a night market. The riverside area has generally better nightlife than the old town and more amenities, particularly for families. In the evening time we recommend that visitors to Chiang Mai cross over to the over side of the Ping River from the the Chiangklan Road and travel a short distance north along the river to the Riverside Bar and Restaurant which has live music every night as well as serving great food and drinks.
