About Chiang Mai Old Town
At the centre of the modern city of Chiang Mai is the old walled town. This part of the city is nearly square 1.6 km across by 1.5 km wide once surrounded by city walls which are now only intact in short stretches, and moat which still runs the entire way around the city. This is the original part of Chiang Mai which was founded in 1296 as the new capital of the Lanna Kingdom by King Mangrai. The King created Chiang Mai by fortified an area which contained an older town called Wiang Nopburi.

Many visitors to Chiang choose to stay within the old walled part of the city partly because it is the location of some of Chiang Mai’s most notable tourist attractions, such as What Phra Singh and Wat Chedi Luang, and partly because it has many value for money guesthouses, restaurants and bars. Some visitors prefer to stay outside the old city near the riverside where the hotels are bigger and more luxurious and the restaurants are more fancy. However, for a real flavour of what Chiang Mai has to offer we recommend staying in the old walled city. The narrow streets are atmospheric and there is a very lively nightlife centred around the corner of the Ravithi and Ratchapakhinai Roads. On Sunday night the whole area comes to life with the walking street market, which is the social highlight of the week in Chiang Mai.
