About Travel to Khao Sok

There are two entrances to Khao Sok National Park. Bus services from Ao Nang take passengers to the Eastern Entrance to the park. This is the entrance to use to access the canopy walkway and for trekking inside the park. The other entrance, the Western Entrance, to Khao Sok National Park is Ratchaprapha Marina on Cheow Lan Lake. From Ratchaprapha Marina visitors can take boat trips on the lake and access the famous floating bungalows.

Geography of Khao Sok National Park

The park covers an area of 739 square kilometres. About 60% of the park is taken up by a range of hills that rise up to 960 metres above sea level. Another 165 square kilometres (22%) of Khao Sok National is taken up by Cheow Lan Lake, which was created by damming the Khao Sok River in the early 1980s controversially flooding several villages.

Khao Sok National Park is joined to three other national parks forming a protected wilderness area of over 3,500 square kilometres which is large enough to support populations of rarer wild animals.

Flora and Fauna in Khao Sok National Park

Khao Sok National Park is believed to be home to 48 species of mammals, 311 species of birds, 30 species of bats, as well as lots of different types of insects, reptiles and fish. The rarer species living in the park include wild elephants, leopards, bears, and the occasional tiger. Visitors are unlikely to see the rarer of these animals except during the dry season when animals come from the remote interior of the park to drink at the lake. Visitors are much more likely to see several types of wild monkeys and a really wide range of exotic birds.

The park is also full of lots of different types of trees and plants. The most famous of these trees and plants is the Rafflesia, which has a flower that grows up to 90 cm in diameter. The Rafflesia comes into bloom between January and March each year, just after the end of the local rainy season. To see this enormous and very smelly flower visitors need to join an organised trek and walk up to 5 km from the nearest road to reach the spots where they grow.
