About travel to Hat Yai

Its a long way from Bangkok to Hat Yai and you may find that flying is a better, and not much more expensive option, than travelling down in a 2nd Class A/C sleeper berth. If you do plan to to travel by train all the other you will enjoy the journey more if you beak it up into manageable stages. There are lots of places to visit on the way down to Hat Yai.

The first major destination on the Southern line from Bangkok to Hat Yai is Hua Hin, which is developed mainland beach resort with hotels and restaurants to suit all budgets. Travelling further south there are stops at more low key beach resorts such as Prachuap Khiri Khan and Bang Sapan Yai where you can enjoy great beaches at lower prices and fewer crowds than you find in Hua Hin. Further south along the train line you come to Chumphon, which is place to catch a ferry to Koh Tao. After Chumphon you come to Surat Thani which is where you need to alight the train for ferries to Koh Phangan and Koh Samui and bus services to Khao Sok National Park. After Surat Thani is the Southern Thai town of Nakhon Si Thammarat which has a notable temple and is near the beach resort of Sichon. The last major stop before Hat Yai is Phattalung which as well being a pleasant town is near the wildlife reserve of Thale Noi. Thale Noi has a large protected wetland area which is one of the best places in South East Asia for bird spotting.
