About Travel to Krabi
Mainland Krabi Province is a place of outstanding natural beauty which offers a different experience to staying on the more famous islands in Krabi, such as Koh Lanta and Koh Phi Phi.
Popular Areas in Mainland Krabi Province
There are three main places which are popular with holidaymakers visiting the mainland part of Krabi Province:
- Ao Nang
- Railay
- Krabi Town
Ao Nang and Railay are two most popular places to stay overnight, partly because both areas have good swimming beaches. Krabi Town has no beach but it does have lots of points of interest including some cultural attractions which are absent from Ao Nang and Railay.

Ao Nang
Located 17 km to the south east of Krabi Town, Ao Nang is the busiest tourist destination in mainland Krabi. Ao Nang is easy to reach from Bangkok via Krabi International Airport and offers a really wide range of accommodation and styles of food. In addition to this, Ao Nang has a nice 1.4 km long white sand beach.
All these factors combined make Ao Nang very successful in attraction visitors on short holidays to Thailand, particularly families not wanting to make an additional journey on a ferry to reach one of the islands.
Railay
Railay is very close to Ao Nang, but it’s also very different.
Railay is a peninsula immediately to the south of Ao Nang Beach. Because of the steep sided hills Railay is inaccessible by car which makes this part of the mainland feel like a separate island. From Ao Nang Beach you can reach Railay in less than 15 minutes by local taxi boat.
Railay has four beaches, each with a small town behind. Railay West Beach is the most developed of the four beaches. From Railay West Beach you can easily walk to two of the other beaches, Railay East Beach and Phra Nang Beach.
The fourth beach in Railay, Tonsai Beach, is more isolated. To reach Tonsai Beach you either need to take a taxi boat or walk up and down steep trails to get there. Tonsai Beach is the centre of the local climbing industry and the village has a more bohemian feel to it than the other three beaches which cater more to mass tourism.
Krabi Town
Krabi Town gets a lot of day trippers but not so many foreign visitors choose to stay there because it has no beach.
Krabi Town is small, with around 30,000 residents, and scenically located on the banks of the Pak Nam Krabi River. The riverside area is the focal point of the town with a well maintained riverfront park and a lively night time food market.
Krabi Town is also notable for its other markets, one of which is a weekend market with live music and alcoholic drinks on sale, as well as lots of different types of food, clothes and souvenirs. The town’s day time market, Maharaj Food Market, is the largest fresh food market in Southern Thailand and a great place to see what is grown locally and caught in the seas around Krabi.
