Travel from Kuala Lumpur

Kuala Lumpur is Peninsula Malaysia’s main transport hub. The city has a major central train station, a large bus station and a major international airport. For overland travel the fastest form of transport is to travel by train. Malaysia has two major intercity train lines, one running through the west coast states and the other through the east coast states.

Travel northwards by train from Kuala Lumpur to Ipoh, Penang and Padang Besar is very straightforward. Direct train services depart frequently from KL Sentral Station travelling northwards on the East Coast line.

Travel southwards by train towards Singapore is less convenient. There are no direct trains from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore at the moment. To travel by train from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore you need to take a train south to Gemas, and change trains there to travel Johor Bahru, where you then need to catch a shuttle train to Singapore.

Because of the limitations with train travel in Malaysia, travel by bus from Kuala Lumpur is a popular option. Kuala Lumpur’s main bus station is the large Terminal Bersepadu Selatan, which is located to the South of the city centre and easy to reach by Kuala Lumpur’s fast and efficient suburban railway network. There are frequent departures from the Terminal Bersepadu Selatan to destinations across Malaysia, as well as to Singapore and Thailand.
