Phrae is the capital city of Phrae Province. The city is built on the banks of the Yom River at an elevation of 159 metres between larger mountains on either side rising to elevations of over 800 metres above sea level. What Phrae is best known for is the large teak forests in the surrounding hills.
Phrae attracts some, but not lots of, tourists. The town itself has some very unique buildings made of teak wood such as the Pratabjai House and the Vongburi House which you should visit if you go to Phrae. There is also a museum and two notable Buddhist temples, Wat Chorm Sawan and Wat Phra That Cho Hae. To really get the most of a visit to Phrae, however, you really need to take out of the town and into the surrounding countryside. The Phae Mueang Phi Forest Park has some interesting rock formations, and the Wiang Kosai National Park has a little known 7 stage waterfall.
