About Kanchanaburi
Kanchanaburi is a fairly peaceful town with slightly over 30,000 permanent inhabitants except during the late morning and early afternoon when bus loads of Thai and foreign tourists arrive to visit the famous Bridge Over the River Kwai as part of a tour which may also include a visit to the war cemeteries and the Erawn National Park. It is worth actually staying in Kanchanaburi as its nice place with good hotels and guesthouses pleasantly situated along the river. A night the liveliest area in the Maenamkwai Road which runs parallel to the river. There are bars and restaurants here catering to foreign tourists and a visible expat community living in the town who frequent these bars on a nightly basis. The expat community seems to be largely Australian and French people in their 40s and 50s. This area is easy to avoid if that is not your thing.

Kanchanaburi town is the also the place from where you can travel to other destinations in Kanchanaburi province:
- Srinakarind National Park: A beautiful part of Kanchanaburi that you need to hire your own car or motorbike, or go on an organise tour, to reach. This park has a large reservoir, caves and waterfalls.
- Erawan National Park: A large forest with some of the most beautiful waterfalls in Thailand which you need to walk to. Public services to the Erawan National Park depart from Kanchanaburi Bus Station.
- Sangkhlaburi: Easy to get to by bus to Sangkhlaburi from Kanchananburi (4 to 5 hours), this is a lovely rural town which has a very famous 400 metre wooden bridge (Saphan Mon) built by the local Mon community to join the two sides of the town.
