Phuket Town
Phuket Town is fast becoming a tourist destination in its own right. Phuket is best known for its beaches, luxurious hotels and fine dining restaurants. Phuket Town has none of these, but what it does have is something the rest of the island is lacking: history and culture. Phuket Town is also great value for money and has no ‘red light’ district and none of the type of tourists that this attracts.

Before tourism took off in Phuket, the main industries where tin mining and rubber farming and Phuket Town was the economic centre of the island. Large numbers of Chinese immigrants came to Phuket in the middle of the 19th Century and their descendants still live in a large distinct community in Phuket Town. The Chinese settlers built lots of beautiful buildings in the old quarter of Phuket Town which comprises the Thalang Road and surrounding streets. Some of the mansions which the richer members of the community built, such as the Chinpracha House, have been opened to the public as museums. Phuket Town also has a great viewpoint on Rang Hill which is walking distance from Phuket’s old town area. It is easy to travel into Phuket Town on day trips from other parts of the island via Phuket Bus Terminal 1, which is the main local transport hub for the island located right in the centre of Phuket Town.
