Wat Phra Singh in Chiang Mai
Wat Phra Singh was founded in the mid 14th Century in Chiang Mai, which at that time was the capital city of the Lanna Kingdom. The Lanna Kingdom was a separate state within what is modern day Thailand with its own unique culture and architecture. Wat Phra Singh is one of the best places in Thailand to see traditional Lanna style architecture. Particularly notable is the temple’s wooden prayer hall, constructed in 1345, known as the Viharn Lai Kham. The exterior and interior of the prayer hall feature very intricate wood carvings. Viharn Lai Kham also hosts a very old, and very important statue. The statue is known as Phra Singh Buddha and the temple complex is named after it. This statue is believed to be copy of a very old statue which once resided in a temple in India built on the spot where the Lord Buddha achieved enlightenment.

Other highlights of Wat Phra Singh include its large golden chedi, 15th Century library, early 19th Century wooden ordination hall, and grand main prayer hall containing a large gold Buddha statue cast in 1477. Wat Phra Singh is open to visitors every day from 06:00 until 20:00 and for foreign visitors admission costs 50 THB.
