About Nakhon Sawan

Nakhon Sawan is first significant town in Thailand’s Northern Region which you come to travelling north from Bangkok and as such is considered to be the ‘Gateway’ to the North of Thailand. Nakhon Sawan is also the place where the Chao Phraya River is formed by the meeting of the Ping, Nan, Yam and Wong Rivers and from Nakhon Sawan the Chao Phraya River flows southwards through Central Bangkok to the Gulf of Thailand. Before road and rail links were built, agricultural produce from all over the North of Thailand passed through Nakhon Sawan by river boat on route to the trading ports of Bangkok and Samut Prakan.

Nakhon Sawan is a picturesque town with a park in the centre which contains a large lake. Overlooking the town is the pagoda of Wat Khiriwong which is at the summit of Khiriwong Hill. Nakhon Sawan attracts few foreign visitors and has little in the way of facilities focused to meeting the needs of foreign visitors. Nakhon Sawan does, however, have plenty of hotels and restaurants located near the town centre park as well as a large bus station and a train station located on the train line connecting Bangkok to Chiang Mai.
