About Sakon Nakhon
Sakon Nakhon is medium sized town in the North Region of Thailand with a population of around 200,000. Few foreign visitors stay in Sakon Nakhon and consequently it has few hotels and restaurants which cater well to foreign tourists.
Most restaurants shut by 20:00 and none of the hotels have foreign language TV channels in the rooms. For this reason most foreign visitors to Sakon Nakhon, as well as the majority of Thai visitors, go to Sakon Nakhon on a day trip and choose to spend the night in Udon Thani which has a much better range of hotels, restaurants, bars and shops.

The main reason why visitors come to Sakon Nakhon is because of the temples located in the city and the province, the best of which are:
- Wat Phra That Choeng Chum: City centre temple with a 24 metre high chedi constructed in the 17th Century. Wat Phra That Choeng Chum is one of the most important Buddhist temples in Thailand.
- Wat Pha Suttawas: Another city centre temple dedicated to a famous monk. This temple has a very ornate congregational hall and a shrine hall to Ajahn Mun.
- Wat Tham Pha Daen: This is a hilltop temple with beautiful gardens and great views. Wat Tham Pha Daen is located 23.3 km by road from Sakon Nakhon City.
