Wat Phra Thaen Si La At in Uttaradit
Located 7 km to the west of Uttaradit, Wat Phra Thaen Si La At is the most famous and important temple in the province. The reason that the temple is so important is because enshrined within it is a block of stone upon which the Lord Buddha is believed to sat. The local legend is that the Lord Buddha visited this part of Thailand with 500 disciples and gave sermons at a town near where Wat Phra Thaen Si La At. This is an important legend for Thai Buddhists and several of the past Kings of Thailand have visited the temple to worship before this sacred stone.

Wat Phra Thaen Si La At was founded at some point during the Sukhothai period, which ran from 1238 to 1438, although the precise date is unknown because of a lack of historical records. Unfortunately, the original temple burnt down in 1908 leaving only the slab stone intact. The modern temple building is ornately decorated with lots of statues and some very good contemporary wall murals of the current and past kings of Thailand and bizarrely a picture of the girl who featured in Leonardo Da Vinci’s painting the Mona Lisa, amongst other subjects. Wat Phra Thaen Si La At is open every day from 08:00 to 16:30 and entrance is free.
