About Uttaradit
Uttaradit is a medium sized town in the Northern Region of Thailand in a province that borders Laos. Uttaradit has relatively little of interest to tourists. The town centre area near the train station has little economic development, and the best hotels, shops and restaurants are located on the Boroma At Road. The Friday Shopping Mall with the Friday Hotel above is the place to shop in Uttaradit with the most facilities and the best place to find international food in Uttaradit. Most tourists who do stay in Uttaradit are on their way to the national parks in the area and the Queen Sirikit Dam, behind which is a picturesque reservoir with a surface area of over 250 square kilometres.

The two most prominent attractions in Uttaradit are temples located to the west of the city centre: Wat Phra Thaen Si La At and Wat Phra Brommathat Thung Yang. An ancient town long pre-dating modern Uttaradit is believed to have been located in this area. According to local legend, and widely believed in Thailand, the Lord Buddha came to this town during his lifetime to give sermons about Buddhism. Wat Phra Thaen Si La At hosts a slab of stone which the Lord Buddha is believed to have sat on. Lots of Thai Buddhists, including several of Thailand’s Kings, have made the pilgrimage to Wat Phra Thaen Si La At to worship before this slab of stone.
