About Hat Yai

With a population of around 160,000 permanent residents Hat Yai is the largest city in the Southern Region of Thailand and perhaps the most multi-cultural town Thailand after Bangkok, with large Thai Buddhist, Malay-Muslim and Chinese Thai communities all coexisting fairly harmoniously within the metropolitan area. Relative to the number of major tourist attractions in the city itself, of which there are relatively few, Hat Hai is immensely popular with foreign visitors. The majority of the international visitors to Hat Yai are Asian tourists. Hat Yai is near the border with Malaysia and lot of Malaysian people come to Hat Yai for short breaks to go shopping and to eat in the local restaurants. Hat Yai has a very well developed hospitality industry and it caters well to Asian holidays makers, including lots of discreet but large venues offering adult entertainment of a kind which is not permitted in Malaysia, Singapore or Indonesia.

Far fewer European and North American visitor come to Hat Yai as a destination in its own right. Many of these people do, however, travel through Hat Yai via its large airport, train station or bus station on route either to or from the Andaman Coast or Malaysia. It is easy to get to Langkawi and Koh Lipe from Hat Yai. As a place to stop over overnight during a long journey Hat Yai is also pretty good. There are lots of good hotels and restaurants a short distance from the town’s railway station and a small number of Western style bars, such as Post Laser Disc Pub & Restaurant, Lion Bar Hatyai and The Swan Restaurant Hatyai.
