About Bangkok Train Station

Hua Lamphong Railway Station, also known simply as Bangkok Train Station, used to main train station in Bangkok and the terminus for 4 out of of 5 of Thailand’s major intercity railway station. Only ordinary train services now depart from, and arrive into, Bangkok Hua Lamphong Railway Station.

The station was opened in 1916 and the striking Neo-Renaissance facade of the front of the station is a major landmark in Bangkok. After more than a 100 years in service, however, Hua Lamphong faces a phased closure over the next 5 to 10 years. A major new train station is currently under construction near the existing Bang Sue Junction Railway Station in the north of Bangkok and is set to open in 2021.

The future of the magnificent Bangkok Railway Station is uncertain and judging by announcements from the State Railways of Thailand the plan keeps changing. Initially the intention was to stop train services from Hua Lamphong entirely and turn the building into a museum, and possibly to resume operating a business from the long redundant hotel on the second floor of the station.

Now the plan seems to be to phase out services from Hua Lamphong over a few years, with the old train station continuing to be the terminus for suburban or shorter train services. Either way, if you haven’t travelled to or from Bangkok Railway Station yet make sure that you do so in the next 2 or 3 years or you won’t have another chance.
