About Khao Sok National Park

Khao Sok National Park is a large forest reserve located on the western edge of Surat Thani Province some distance inland. The National Park covers an area of 739 square kilometres and is believed to be one of the oldest forests in the world containing an estimated 5% of all the world’s species of animal, reptile, bird and insect life as well a vast array of trees and plants, including the world’s largest flower.

The park is open 24 hours a day although the visitor centre is only open from 08:00 to 18:00 each day. The entrance fee for foreign visitors is 300 THB per 24 hours. Each day longer you stay in the park the more you need to pay.

Khao Sok National Park was created in 1980. The area was then flooded a few years later creating the massive Cheow Lan Lake, which covers approximately 185 km and feeds a hydroelectric generating plant.

The lake is now the centre piece of the national park and it provides easy access to visitors. Khao Sok National Park is one of the few national parks in Thailand where you can travel right into the centre of the park without needing to trek for several days through leech and snake infested jungle. The lake also has some floating bungalows were you can stay overnight.
