About Koh Lanta
Koh Lanta is a unique destination and different in many ways to other more famous Thai holiday islands such as Koh Phi Phi, Phuket and Koh Samui. Koh Lanta, which is in fact a cluster of several islands two of which are permanently inhabited, is developed for tourism but not over developed. Koh Lanta has no big name hotels, it has no airport, it has no strip of bars with neon lights and ladies who no respectable gentlemen would introduce to his mother, but it does have great beaches, a rich culture, an unpolluted environment and a relaxed atmosphere.

The main island is Koh Lanta Yai and the main town of that island, with 5,000 inhabitants, is Saladan. Saladan is in the north of Koh Lanta Yai and it has the island’s main long distance ferry pier, known as Saladan Pier. If you are planing to only stay a night or two in Koh Lanta then stay in Saladan at one of the small guesthouses built on posts over the river estuary near to the pier. For long stays in Koh Lanta consider booking a bungalow or hotel room on one of the beaches along the West Coast of Koh Lanta Yai. The main island is 30 km long and has beaches running the nearly the entire length of the West Coast. As a general rule the further south you go from Saladan the quieter it gets and depending on your preferences you may find you prefer to stay nearer or further away from Saladan.
