By public bus it takes between 7 hours 40 minutes to travel 434 km from Hat Yai to Phuket. Phuket is not connected to the railway network in Thailand. If you did want to travel by train you could take a train to Surat Thani and from there take a minivan or bus to Phuket.

Phuket Bus Terminal 2 is long distance bus station located over 4 km from Phuket Town. There are few public transport options available for local travel from Phuket Bus Terminal 2. If you want to travel direct from Phuket Bus Terminal 2 to other destination in Phuket you need to take a taxi. Taxis are relatively expensive in Phuket. They generally refuse to use the meter and charge high fix prices for journeys to the popular beach resorts. If you want to travel cheaply to other destinations in Phuket you first need to travel from Phuket Bus Terminal 2 to Phuket Town and take a minivan or shared taxi from there.

The best place in Phuket Town to find a minivan or shared taxi to popular destinations such as Patong, Kata or Rawai is Phuket’s old bus station in the centre of Phuket Town which is often now referred to Phuket Bus Terminal 1. The cheapest way to travel from Phuket Bus Terminal 1 to Phuket Bus Terminal 2 is to take a shared songthaew taxi. The purple coloured songthaew taxis run on a fixed route from Phuket Bus Terminal 2 to Phuket Bus Terminal 1. You may need to wait a while to catch the purple songthaew and wait again for a shared taxi or minivan from the old bus station but you save several hundred baht on the cost of your journey, particularly if you are travelling alone.
