About Travel to Surat Thani

Surat Thani is one of the largest cities in Southern Thailand, with a city centre population of around 140,000 and a total of over 500,000 people living in the wider metropolitan area. Surat Thani is also a fairly new city which grew from a small settlement into a town during the 20th Century. As a consequence, Surat Thani City has few points of interest for leisure travellers other than as a transit point for travel to popular holiday islands, or train travel to Bangkok.

Staying Surat Thani City

Surat Thani City has a good selection of tourist hotels, the best of which (such as the Diamond Plaza) are located slightly outside the city centre on the Sri Wichai Road. For a short stay many visitors prefer to stay closer to the city centre, and their onward transport connections. Hotels such as B2 Surat Thani Boutique and Budget Hotel, Evergreen Suite Hotel, and Blu Monkey Hub & Hotel Suratthani, are centrally located and represent excellent value for money.

There is a cluster of popular restaurants which open late into the evening located just to the north of Night Boat Pier on side streets off the Bandon Road. There is also a popular night market which serves a wide variety of foods located on Tonpo Alley, which is also near the Night Boat Pier.

Train Travel to Bangkok

Surat Thani Railway Station is located 16 km by road outside to the south west of Surat Thani City in a small town called Tha Kham. Public bus services to the train station depart frequently from the Talad Kaset 1 Bus Station, which is located on a side road off the Talad Mai Road in the centre of the city. Travel by bus takes about 50 minutes. Travel by taxi takes around 30 minutes.

There are currently 9 trains a day from Surat Thani Railway Station to Bangkok, all but one of which depart in the evening and travel overnight to reach Bangkok. See train times and buy tickets from Surat Thani to Bangkok.

Ferry Services to Koh Samui and Koh Phangan

All but two ferry services from Surat Thani to Koh Samui or Koh Phangan depart from Donsak, which is located 65 km by road to the east of Surat Thani City. The exceptions are the Lomprayah High Speed Ferry and Lomlahkkhirin companies, which operate several services a day from Tapee Pier which is only 6 km by road to the north of Surat Thani City.

There are two companies operating ferry services from Donsak to Koh Samui and Koh Phangan, Seatran Ferry and Raja Ferry. Both companies operate car ferry services with multiple departures throughout the day.

Both Seatran Ferry and Raja Ferry also operate joint bus and ferry services taking passengers from Surat Thani City to the ferry port in Donsak for the sea crossing. Two other companies, however, also offer joint bus and ferry services from Surat Thani City to Koh Samui and Koh Phangan, Phantip and Phangan Tour 2000. Phantip and Phangan Tour 2000 are popular because their bus services to Donsak depart from the Talad Mai Road, which is right in the centre of the city.
