Famous Chedi Tower

Wat Phra That Phanom is one of the most important temples in Thailand. The key feature of Wat Phra That Phanom is the 57 metres tall white and gold chedi constructed within the temple grounds. The chedi has been reconstructed numerous times, each time taller and more ornate than the one before.

History of the Chedi

The first chedi was constructed at some point between the 8th and 10th Century to house religious relics, in particular some people believe that the Buddha’s breast bone is stored in a small room in the base of the chedi, transported from India to this very small town in Northern Thailand by one of Buddha’s disciples endowed with the power to fly.

Local Beliefs

Some Thai Buddhist also believe that by walking around the chedi 3 times and making offerings on a 7 separate occasions will give them a happy and financially prosperous life.

Visitors to the Temple

Wat Phra That Phanom attracts a lot of Thai visitors, but relatively few foreign visitors because the temple is located in a remote part of Thailand away from the better known and more popular tourist destinations in Thailand.
