About Wat Phra That Phanom

Wat Phra That Phanom is in the town of That Phanom, 58.3 km by road to the south of Nakhon Phanom. The easiest and cheapest way to get there form Nakhon Phanom is by taking a shared taxi from the Aphiban Bancha Road (in Nakhon Phanom town centre) to That Phanom. Wat Phra That Phanom is open every day from 06:30 to 18:30 and entrance to the temple is free. A large festival takes place at the temple at around the end of February or start of March every year and we recommend avoiding the temple at this time unless large crowds and very full buses and taxis are something you enjoy.

Wat Phra That Phanom is famous amongst Thai people and other Asian Buddhists for its 57 metre tall white and gold chedi, which is believed to contain the breast bone of the Lord Buddha. A commonly held belief amongst Thai Buddhists is that by visiting the temple on 7 different occasions, and walking around the chedi 3 times on each visit, then making offerings, will result in health and prosperity for life. Not so many foreign visitors make it to Wat Phra That Phanom because it is some distance from the more popular tourist areas around Chiang Mai, Bangkok, Pattaya and Phuket, however, those who do take the trouble to make the journey will find this temple a special and magical place with some of the best temple architecture and sculptures in Thailand.
