About Travel to Koh Phayam
Most foreign visitors who come to Ranong are either planning to cross over to Kawthoung in Myanmar or to travel to the charming and relatively undeveloped island of Koh Phayam. There are two types of boat from Ranong to Koh Phayam: speed boat services which take about 45 minutes to reach the island, and a wooden ferry service which is cheap but takes about two hours. The wooden ferry service is called the Tai Kak Ferry and it operates once a day, typically departing at 10:00. This services departs from Tai Kak Pier, which is 7.7 km from Ranong Bus Station.

Speed boat services to Koh Phayam run more frequently in the high season, usually from 07:30 until 16:30. If your arrival time in Ranong is uncertain then taking a speed boat to Koh Phayam is probably the better option. Speed boat services depart from Ranong Pier, which is 6.2 km from Ranong Bus Station. There are two ways to travel from Ranong Bus Station to Ranong Pier. The quickest option is take one of the motorbike taxis which wait outside the bus station. Expect to pay 70 to 100 THB per person for this service. A cheaper and more safety conscious option is to take a shared taxi. These shared taxis are blue and red and they are frequent. You can flag shared taxis down on the main road outside the bus station and they often wait for customers outside the bus station. If you say ‘Koh Phayam’ to the driver they will understand where you need to go. The drop off point for shared taxis is on the main road on the corner of a side road leading to the pier. It is a 5 minute walk from where the shared taxis drop passengers off to the entrance to the speed boat pier.
