About Johor Bahru

Johor Bahru, known locally as simply ‘JB’, is city of around half a million permanent residents located right at the south tip of Western Malaysia. Johor Bahru is not a popular tourist destination in its own right, although the nearby Legoland Malaysia attracts a lot of visitors. Johor Bahru has long been known as an economically depressed town with a reputation for having a high crime rate. The city has received some recent investment and is starting to show signs of becoming a better place to live. The city centre’s major historical site, and potentially its one major tourist attraction, is the Sultan Abu Bakar Royal Palace Museum which used to be the residence of the Sultan of Johor and is surrounded by beautiful gardens. Unfortunately, this luxurious palace has been closed since 2016, most likely due to lack of funds.

The main reason why most tourists come to Johor Bahru is to get to and from Singapore, which has no shortage public funds to spend on maintaining historical sites and very little crime or anti-social behaviour. There are 3 options for travel from Johor Bahru: bus, train and taxi. Of these three options the best one overall is the shuttle train which takes only 5 minutes, avoiding the long queues on the causeway connecting Johor Bahru and Singapore, and costs only 5 MYR to go and 5 SGD to come back.
