Wat Phra That Choeng Chum in Sakon Nakhon
Wat Phra That Choeng Chum is the most visited place in Sakon Nakhon. Wat Phra That Choeng Chum is a temple famous for its 24 metre high chedi. The Lao style chedi is believed to be built over the foot prints of 4 incarnations of the Lord Buddha. A Khmer style chedi was built in the 10th Century to mark the same spot and the chedi which now existed was built over the top of the earlier chedi in the 17th Century. The chedi, known as Phra That Choeng Chum, is white with a wide base shaped like a lotus bud and thin top section topped with a gold umbrella ornament.

As well as the famous chedi, Wat Phra That Choeng Chum also has a very ornate congregation hall, where the faithful come to meet with the monks, and a much older and very beautiful shrine hall. The shrine hall at Wat Phra That Choeng Chum contains a very famous Buddha statue, the Luang Phor Phra Ong Saen, which was made in 1257.Ā The shrine hall has a deep red interior with intricate gold stencil work on the wooden pillars and supporting beam. The shrine also has some great artwork depicting scenes from the life of the Lord Buddha and stories from the Ramakien, which is the ancient mythical tale of Thailandās creation.
