Patpong Night Market in Bangkok

Patpong Night Market consists of two side streets (Patpong 1 and Patpong 2) which run between the Silom and Suriwong Roads. The night market is easily accessible by the BTS, which is Bangkok’s overhead suburban railway, and from a nearby MRT (metro) station, and also by road. These two streets have a long history as an entertainment centre in Bangkok. During the 1970s and 1980s what is now Patpong Night Market was the busiest red light district in Bangkok. Some hostess bars and strip bars still operate on both streets, but over time Patpong Night Market has become more of a family friendly venue with restaurants, shops and normal bars far outnumbering the establishments associated with the sex industry.

The stalls in Patpong Night Market set up from around 16:00 everyday but the market doesn’t really get going until around 19:00 and then packs up at some time between 21:00 and 23:00 depending on the number of shoppers. Patpong Night Market is famous for being the place to come and buy a fake Rolex watch, or fake designer t-shirt or football strip. A lot of the stalls sell pretty much the same thing, and the prices aren’t fixed, which means that the stall holders try to charge as much as they can and you need to bargain well to get on a good price on items at this market. This said, there are some good products on sale at Patpong Night Market in and amongst the low quality reproductions, and there is also a lively and generally tourist friendly atmosphere. A visit to Patpong Night Market is a good night out in its own right as there are some good restaurants on both streets and some busy bars with live music and drinks at only moderately expensive prices.
