Plaeng Nam Road in Bangkok

The Plaeng Nam Road is a 167 metre long side road in the China Town district of Bangkok connecting the Charoen Krung Road to the Yaowarat Road. Over the past 1 to 2 years the Plaeng Nam Road has emerged as a major tourist attraction in its own right, this is partly because of a new metro station station opened nearby, Mongkol MRT station, and partly because of media mentions in publications like the travel section of the Bangkok Post and an appearance in the TV show Hell’s Kitchen in which chef Gordon Ramsay visited one of the stalls on the street to eat noodles.

What attracts visitors to the Plaeng Nam Road is partly the very old fashioned buildings on the road, some of which are shops selling antiquated items like gas burning lamps. The big attraction, however, is the Thai-Chinese cuisine which is good value for money and cooked in the same way it has been for decades and perhaps even centuries. Most of the food outlets are stalls, like the Kanom Jeep Wat Yuan pushcart restaurant which is famous for its pork dumplings sold for 3 THB a piece, and a smaller number are formal restaurants like Plaeng Nam Shark Fin-Bird’s Nest, which many people claim serves the best shark fin soup and bird’s nest soup in Bangkok and at cheaper prices than most other restaurants in Bangkok.
