About Koh Phi Phi

Koh Phi Phi Don is the largest island in the Koh Phi Phi archipelago and the only island which has any accommodation. The next largest island is Koh Phi Phi Le which you can visit on day trips.

Maya Beach on Koh Phi Phi Le, which was made famous by the film ‘The Beach’, is now reopened to visitors. Maya Beach’s appearance in the film led to very numbers of people wanting to visit which caused damaged to the local environment. The Thai authorities decided to close the beach to tourists for a number of years and strict controls are in place now it has reopened to tourists. An equally unsupportable number of tourists still visits Koh Phi Phi Don but there are no plans to close this tourist island.

The area where most visitors to Koh Phi Phi stay is Tonsai Village, which is the town sandwiched between Tonsai Bay and Loh Dalum Beach in the narrowest part of the island. Tonsai Village has a very dense concentration of hotels, bars and restaurant located in a natural beauty spot between two steep sided hills.

Younger visitors tend to really like Koh Phi Phi because its a very lively spot with lots of other younger visitors. Older visitors sometimes dislike Koh Phi Phi for exactly the same reasons and may want to visit the island for only 1 night, see the sights, and move on.
