About Travel to Koh Mak
Koh Mak is a small and unusual island located between two larger better known islands, Koh Chang and Koh Kood, in the east of Thailand close to the sea border with Cambodia. Koh Mak offers visitors a very different experience to visiting more developed islands such as Koh Samui or Koh Phi Phi.
Five Families
Koh Mak has an unusual history. The whole island was purchased in the late 19th Century by a Thai government official and the majority of the island is still owned and controlled by 5 families who are the descendants of that original owner. The island’s valuable beachfront land has not been sold off to outside developers nor has tourism been developed anywhere near to the same extent as in White Sand Beach on the neighbouring island of Koh Chang.
Before tourism the main industry was coconut farming. The island is fairly flat which makes it ideal for agriculture and about 90% of the island is still covered in coconut plantations. In some notable respects, the island hasn’t changed massively since it first permanently settled.

Facilities on Koh Mak
Koh Mak is a small island of approximately 16 square kilometres. The island has a cross-like shape which means it has a relatively long coast line compared to the size of the land. There are 7 beaches on the island. The longest (and most visited) is the 5 km long Ao Kao Beach. The smallest is the 250 metre long Ao Tao Kai Beach.
Koh Mak doesn’t have any large settlements. The island’s main town, where the ferry pier is located, is Baan Ao Nid which has a village sized population of about 400 people.
Koh Mak has around 15 resorts and guesthouses, most of which you can book online. Seavana Beach Resort Koh Mak and Koh Mak Resort on Ao Soun Yai Beach are among the most luxurious. Koh Mak also has a small number of independent restaurants and bars, which are generally located inland behind the larger beachfront resorts.
Unlike some of the smaller islands on the west coast of Thailand, Koh Mak has 24 hour a day electric, an ATM machine, and both a public and a private medical facility.
