About Travel to Phuket

Phuket is Thailand’s largest island, measuring approximately 50 km by 20 km at its widest point, with a population estimated to be around 450,000. Phuket is also one of Thailand’s most popular tourist destinations.

Travel from Phuket International Airport

Phuket International Airport is a large airport with a long runway which can accommodate even the largest commercial passenger planes. Despite the high volume of people passing through Phuket International Airport, public transport services at the airport are very basic. There is no train service, just a handful of public bus services, connectiong the airport to the rest of what is a fairly large island.

For this reason most passengers arriving at Phuket International Airport choose to pre-book a transfer to their hotel or alternatively take one of the relatively expensive taxis which wait at the airport. The airport is some distance from Phuket Town (33km) and a similar distance to popular beachside destinations like Patong (35 km).

Public Bus from Phuket Airport

For people travelling alone or simply wishing to keep their costs down, then we recommend taking one of the public bus services from the airport to either their end destination, or to Phuket Town where you can transfer to inexpensive local minivan and shared taxi services to your end destination.

The most reilable and frequent of these bus services is the Phuket Airport Bus which runs on a fixed route to Phuket Town. The journey to Phuket Town is scheduled to take 1 hour 25 minutes and costs 158 THB per person.

Where to Stay in Phuket

There are lot of places to stay in Phuket, each with their own different character. Visitors planning to stay more than a few days on the island should consider trying a few different places to get the best out of the island.

Patong is the most popular beachside destination in Phuket. The town is very developed as a consequence. Other popular beaches include Karon, Kata and Surin, all of which are less busy than Patong.

Other options include spending a few nights in Phuket Town. There isn’t a swimming beach in or close to Phuket Town. However, Phuket Town has an interesting Old Town area with buildings dating back to the period from the late 19th Century to the early 20th Century when Phuket was a prsoperous tin mining cente. During that period large numbers of Chinese immigrants settled in Phuket Town building a variety of small and large Chinese influenced resdiential buildings, as well as temples and even a large private school which is now a museum.

Phuket’s Old Town area gets lots of visitors and has events like evening time Walking Street Markets which are very popular.
