Ferry Services to Koh Tao
There are three different ferry services you can take from Chumphon Province to Koh Tao:
- Lomprayah High Speed Ferry: This is the fastest service to Koh Tao. From the ferry pier it takes 1 hour 45 minutes to travel to Koh Tao. The Lomrayah company has a fleet of high speed catamaran ferries which function in the same way as a speed boat. They have enclosed cabins and outdoor seating areas. The only downside of this service as that it’s a bumpy ride in bad weather.
- Songserm: This is the second quickest service, completing the crossing in 2 hours 45 minutes. The Songserm ferry is a large wooden boat with two decks inside the boat and some outdoor seating. It’s a cheaper option than the Lomprayah, but less comfortable with cramped seating and it gets hot in the cabins sometimes. Younger backpackers tend to make up the majority of the customers on this service.

- Night Boat: This service departs at 22:00 or 23:00 and takes 7 hours to reach Koh Tao. The Night Boat is a converted fishing boat which has mattresses in the floor inside which are allocated to passengers rather than seats. We don’t recommend this service for people travelling with small children. The Night Boat works best for younger backpackers arriving late into Chumphon who want to save money on staying in a hotel before travelling the next day.
