About Travel to Khon Kaen

Khon Kaen is one of 4 major cities in the North Eastern Region of Thailand. The city is an important economic centre, and also hosts one of the top universities in Thailand. Khon Kaen is not, however, popular as a tourist destination. Khon Kaen is a relatively new city, established in the early 20th Century, and the buildings in the city centre are modern in style. Despite the absence of tourists, the facilities for visitors are still better than many other Thai cities and towns. There are number of very good restaurants and Western style bars clustered around the Pullman Khon Kaen Raja Orchid Hotel, which is the best hotel in the city. A lot of business travellers pass through the city, along with leisure travellers, as the city is a transport hub and on a major highway which runs from Bangkok north to the border with Laos at Nong Khai. There is a small community of foreign residents, largely retirees and English teachers, living in Khon Kaen and some bars and restaurants which specifically cater for them which are located on and near Soi Kosa.

The most popular attractions in Khon Kaen city centre are Phra Mahathat Kaen Nakhon, which is a temple with a 9 storey pagoda, and Khon Kaen National Museum, which exhibits archaeological finds mainly from the North East Region of Thailand. Of more interest, however, are the Ubolratana Dam, Phu Wiang National Park and Phu Kradueng National Park, all of which are located some distance from Khon Kaen city centre.
