About Chiang Mai
After Bangkok, Chiang Mai is Thailand’s second most popular city for foreign visitors. Chiang Mai is a lot smaller than Bangkok and unlike Bangkok, Chiang Mai is much less of a commercial centre than it is a tourist attraction. The main draw for tourists is Chiang Mai’s old town, which is surrounded by a moat and an ancient city wall sections of which are still intact. The old town in Chiang Mai has many temples and historic wooden buildings. The old town also has lively nightlife and many of the cheaper guesthouses in the area.

Many visitors to Chiang Mai, however, choose to stay in the riverside area near Chiang Mai’s covered Night Bazaar. This area has a lot of value for money 4 and 5 star hotels, seafood restaurants within the markets, and some branded restaurants. On the other side of the Ping River, a short walk from Chiang Mai Night Bazaar, is a popular area with several very good riverside restaurants, the most popular of which is the long running Riverside bar & Restaurant which has live music from local bands nearly every night of the year.
