About Ban Chiang near Udon Thani

Ban Chiang is a small village in Udon Thani where archaeological finds of huge significance where unearthed in the 1960s and 1970s. What was discovered at Ban Chiang was pottery and metal tools dating back to around 1,500 BC which indicated the existence of a stable agrarian community in the area which was technologically advanced for that period in history. Prior to the finds at Ban Chiang the prevailing view was that farming techniques and processes for manufacturing of the kind discovered in the area had only introduced into South East Asia much later by immigrants from China and elsewhere. Many of these important archaeological finds are displayed at the museum in Ban Chiang (the Ban Chiang National Museum) which is open every day from 08:30 until 16:30. Admission is free for Thai Nationals, but everyone else is charged 150 THB.

Ban Chiang National Museum gets fewer visitors than it deserves because it is slightly difficult to get there due its location in a small village 50 km from Udon Thani itself. This is a long and expensive taxi journey and there are no direct public buses from either Undon Thani or Sakon Nakhon to Ban Chiang. The cheapest way to travel to Ban Chiang is to alight from a bus service travelling between Udon Thani and Sakon Nakhon at the small village of Nong Mek, which is on the main highway between these two towns. Tuk-tuks wait at the junction to the road into Nong Mek and charge around 100 THB to take passengers the 7 km from Nong Mek to Ban Chiang National Museum.
