About Travel to Khao Sok

Khao Sok, near Surat Thani, is one of Thailand’s most popular national parks for foreign visitors. The park covers an area of 739 square kilometres, of which 165 square kilometres is covered by the man made Cheow Lan Lake. Khao Sok National Park is notable for its diverse plant, bird, fish and animal life. 48 species of mammal, 311 species of birds, and 30 species of bats have all been spotted living the park. This range of animal life includes wild elephants, tigers, leopards, birds and three species of monkey. The plant life is also extremely diverse, including the world’s largest, and probably smelliest, flower which is over a metre in diameter. The park provides opportunities for trekking, boat tours, excellent fishing and overnight stays on floating bungalows within the park. The price per night for the floating bungalows ranges from 500 to 600 THB per night for the resorts operated by the park authorities and to over 1,000 THB per night for the more luxurious privately operated floating bungalow resorts on the lake.

Joint ferry and bus services from Koh Samui terminate at the Western Entrance to Khao Sok National Park, which is by the national park headquarters. There is a small town by the entrance with plenty of resorts which are more comfortable than those inside the park itself. Trekking and elevated walkways are accessible from the Western Entrance. To take a trip on the lake, and access the floating bungalows, you need to go to the Eastern Entrance to Khao Sok National Park, which is the boat tour pier at Ratchaprapha Marina. You can hire boats at the pier for tours around the lake to drop you off at a floating bungalow resort. Hiring a while boat with driver for a few hours costs around 2,000 THB, although as the boat can fit in up to 6 people you are likely to be able to join a tour with other visitors if you are travelling as a couple or alone to reduce the cost.
