About Khao Lak
Khao Lak is an area along the west cost coast of Thailand which starts about 40 km to the north Phuket Island and stretches for 20 km. Khao Lak has 7 major beaches (Khao Lak Beach, Nang Thong Beach, Bang Niang Beach, Khuk Khak Beach, Cape Pakarang Beach and Bang Sak Beach) and three main towns (Bang La On, Bang Niang and Khuk Khak). Bang La On is the largest town in Khao Lak. The mountains of the Khao Lak Lam Ru National Park form a scenic backdrop to the beaches. The highest mountain has an elevation of 1,050 metres above sea level.

Compared to Phuket, Khao Lak has a laid back feel with a wide range range of hotels, restaurants and shops. Khao Lak is a family oriented tourist area with some very good resorts and prices which which are generally above average for Thailand. The other issue for travellers on a smaller budget is that public transport is very limited in Khao Lak, meaning to get around you generally need to take taxis or rent your own vehicle. What Khao Lak does have, however, is great beaches and superb diving particularly in the Similan Islands which are about 65 km off the coast. The Khao Lak–Lam Ru National Park is also worth visiting with great walks that will take you to some large waterfalls and great viewpoints. The national park also has abundant wildlife, trees and flowers.
